UFC 301: Title fight official as Pantoja and Erceg hit weight in Rio

Flyweight contenders make championship weight ahead of UFC 301 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The battle for the undisputed UFC flyweight title is officially on after the two main event combatants successfully hit championship weight in Rio de Janeiro.

Reigning UFC flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja and first-time challenger Steve Erceg headline UFC 301 in Brazil on Saturday night, and both men made weight at the official morning weigh-ins, as they each hit 125 pounds for their headlining title clash.

The co-main event will see the return to action of former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo, who comes out of retirement to fight in his home town against Jonathan Martinez. Aldo didn’t weigh in until later in the morning, but arrived on scale on weight and ready, coming in at the bantamweight limit of 136 pounds.

The rest of the main card weighed in with no issue, but there was a worrying moment on the scale when France’s William Gomis emerged for his weigh-in looking wobbly and dehydrated. He stepped onto the scale still wearing his t-shirt and signalled as if he was done cutting any more weight.

However, when the commissioner inspecting the scale read his weight, Gomis was announced at 143 pounds, meaning he officially made weight with three full pounds to spare for his featherweight bout with Jean Silva. A very unsteady Gomis then needed to be helped out of the room, and it remains to be seen whether he will be medically cleared to fight tomorrow.
